History of Dialectical Behavior Therapy Dialectical Behavior Therapy, also know as DBT is a type of psychotherapy that deals with the cognitive and behavioral parts of the mind. This type of therapy came about back in the late 1980s by a woman named Marsha M. Linehan. She created this type of therapy to help her deal with her own disorder, which was borderline personality disorder. The main reason of DBT is to help people with any kind of mental health disorders, not just borderline personality disorder. DBT is part of the cognitive-behavioral aspect in the way that it is helping the client work on their thinking, behaviors, and their feelings.
