This way of thinking, can determines how we view and experience events, and how we physically respond to these events (Walsh.J, 2013). Ashley’s impulsivity, reactivity, hyperactivity, defiance and lack of emotional regulation skills impair Ashley’s ability to function appropriately in social situations. Her presenting symptomatology of ADHD and ODD has placed a strain on her family, inhibits her to fully succeed in school, and her ability to have positive social interactions. Due to her lack on control over her impulses and reactivity in situations, Ashley’s reactions come off as hostile and irrational compared to the situation. Ashley’s impulsivity and distractibility in class, causes classroom disruption. Due to her acting out behaviors within the classroom, Ashley is often removed from class, which causes an angry outburst from her. Ashley lacks the ability to recognize how her reactive behaviors and impulsivity can escalate a situation, which impairs a rational response to the said situation. Part of Cognitive Behavioral Theory states that when a person cognitions modified directly, it indirectly changes the persons overt actions (Spiegler.M & Guervremont.D.C, 2003,p.302). DBT uses pieces of cognitive behavioral therapy, combined with the practices of mindfulness, acceptance and dialects (O 'Connell.B & Dowling.M, 2014). Dialectical Behavioral Therapy was created by Marsha Linehan , and was intended to help patients with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) (O 'Connell.B & Dowling.M, 2014). The symptomatology of, poor emotional regulation skills, behavioral issues that associate with BPD, shares similarities of how ADHD and ODD symptoms present themselves (Frazier. S.N & Vela., 2014). Seeing the similarities between the different conditions, a combination of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy would be beneficial for Ashley in helping her develop more adaptive behaviors than the ones that are displayed in triggering situations. For Ashley CBT will change her distorted cognitions, and help better rationalize her thoughts that are connected to her feelings and behaviors. While CBT works on Ashley’s cognitions, DBT works on directly changing the maladaptive behaviors, and replacing them with more adaptive
