Language can vary between people because of a number of things; how and where they grew up, moving to a new place, starting a new job, or even hanging around people from a different place than you. Language and thought connects because thought is what helps to form language. There are many psychologists who have their own theories about how language is learned and adapted as you age. Jean Piaget, Lev Vygotsky, and Steven Pinker are three who all believe in cognitive development, but have variations in how language is developed. The way we grow up is how we learn our most known language, through family and surroundings, we get a sense of how people talk. He believed that children go through four stages to learn a language and become mature. The four stages are the sensorimotor, preoperational, concrete operational, and finally the formal operation stage. (Piaget, 1967) The sensorimotor stage is where the sensory motor skills are developed. Preoperational stage is where the preoperational abilities begin to develop. Next is the concrete operational stage, where logical skills are beginning to form. Finally, is the formal operational stage, where abstract thoughts and logical skills are fully developed and their understanding of the world is greater. He thought that children are active learners, which meant they learn from experience and the environment around them. He also believed that we learn language through assimilation, which is when you take in and understand the information you are presented. I had to stop being a teenager, who babbles about random things and can make no sense at all sometimes, to someone in charge of kids. I knew I had to change how I reacted to an event, like not laughing if someone fell or got hurt. I had to change how I spoke to the kids that just got in trouble. Talking to kids is a lot different than talking to people my age because they do not understand everything, or why you are not allowed to do something. I realized while learning about language from the three authors that my actions and what I say impact the kids around me. Vygotsky’s theory about how language is developed helps to understand why language is changed because of certain events that take place, or simply where you are. The most memorable time that I really saw how my language at the daycare was different than my normal was when I had to call one of the parents. Their child was running around and fell, like any other toddler, and got a little bump on his forehead. I called his dad and knew I had to sound professional. I spoke calmly and got to the point. Luckily for me, the father was a really nice guy and laughed while saying that it was no big deal.
