Introduction
Designer babies used to be something that was only in science fiction books, but now, scientists are very close to being able to create them. There are many unknowns with designer babies such as will they be used to create healthier babies only, or will everything be about making the “perfect” looking baby. That is just one example of many. However, what could possibly be one of the most harmful consequences of designer babies is a reduced gene pool that could be caused by the elimination of certain genes, and that is unethical because it could have huge negative impacts on future generations.
Background
Before a person can understand all of the potential consequences of creating a designer baby, he or she must first understand what a designer baby is and how close people are to creating one. According to this article, people are beginning to be able to create designer babies now: “When Chinese researchers reported using a technique called CRISPR/Cas9 to edit the genome of human embryos this past April, they sparked a worldwide debate over how this technology could (or should) be used…CRISPR isn’t the first genome-editing tool, but it is by far the best” (Maldarelli). The article then goes on to explain what the technology is, and that at this point in time with this technology it is theoretically possible to create a designer baby.
