Designer babies allow the parent to change a certain part of the genetic of a child, such as their gender, their intelligence and their appearance. However, due to the technology in question being quite new, there are errors that are made. For example, there is a chance that the embryo itself may be killed, or the baby may be born with down syndrome, an intellectual disability. The genetic technology on its own is extremely unforeseeable at this point in time. The New York professor Jacques Cohen has already engineered 30 of these designer children in a project and it has been confirmed that there was a problem with 1 of them, with many other reports on the project to come. This could be dangerous because of the many possible lives that are being ruined by the mistakes made by genetic engineers and technology. Secondly, the parent may have a choice with certain parts of the child, however there are many things that do not rest in the parents hands. For example certain genes that are selected by parents will control other aspects of the future child’s body. For example, a parent could end up with an intelligent child with red hair, however, she may develop a hostile or mean personality. The practice is similar to gambling, where the parent choose a certain gene …show more content…
Being a designer baby can affect both the life of the child and the people around the child who care for it. For example, the fact that they don’t have biological parents, and that they were created through medical science instead of biology may cause them to be bully-prone. Eventually, when enough of these designer children are constructed, they will be seen as a group of their own, or a so-called race. This will affect how designer babies interact with other people their age, and vice-versa. Problems like such could affect who bullies who in schools or areas. The designer babies, who will most likely have superior intelligence, will be able to evade the bullies. However, being genetically engineered doesn’t give them a physical edge, and if a supposed conflict were to occur, the regular children will have an advantage. That will cause problems with the child’s physical lifestyle. Another part of being a designer baby that could affect a child is the high standards set for them. No child likes having high standards, although sometimes it pushes them to work harder. This could cause overly high expectations, because although these children are extremely intelligent, that doesn’t necessarily mean that they can use the intelligence correctly and in the right places. For example, the genetically modified child may use his/her intelligence to become a
