Describe New York City

Improved Essays
There are two main reasons I want to be at NYU: New York City, and music technology.

First, the city. I went to LaGuardia High School, and when I first applied to college, I was searching for something new. I figured it would be a nice change of pace to leave the hustle bustle of the city and head off to some place quiet. As the semesters went by, my upstate campus began to feel isolated. After a certain hour, the whole county shuts down and heads to bed. Quite a shock coming from the city that never sleeps. Sure, being around the trees and the mountains is beautiful, but that unique New York life-force is painfully absent. People come from all over the world to NYC to experience that life-force, and I realize now that I was a fool to have

The tedious amounts of work and the little amount of time to complete projects before their presentations. I am also reminded of the nightwalks, the twenty minute walk from my dorm to the building. In this room I associate the quiet deserted campus I went through at all hours of the night. Not only the long nights but the days as well the three hour class twice a week for an entire semester. Happiness would come when the time came to place my work in the room and explain what I had done for so many hours as everyone gazed at it with their own interpretations and…

    • 3 Pages

College is about getting a degree, but staying in a library or a dorm all day is going to make a miserable four years. College is about allowing students to feel independent and to get involved, which results in living in a stable environment, in addition to community engagement. Of course, getting an education is prominent, but there are other essential components of a college lifestyle, such as going to a school event or interacting with classmates. In Graeme Wood’s essay, “Is College Doomed?”, he explains the diverse dynamics of the online school, Minerva. The founder of Minerva, Ben Nelson, explained to Wood that, students yearly, “attend university in a different place, so that after four years they’ll have the kind of international experience…

Throughout my life I have lived in three cultural distinct regions Lima Peru, White Plains New York and Baltimore Maryland. For the first two years of my life I lived in Lima, Peru and even though I never culturally adapted myself into the culture I would often visit for months and immerse myself into the culture. I can say with confidence that if I grew up in that culture I would not my be the same person I am today because of the fact that they are a collectivistic country and that would change my outlook on myself and the community around me. At around my second birthday my family and I decided to move to the United States in search of a better quality of life. While most of my family live in Baltimore, Maryland my father had already established himself in White Plains, New York a…

Having lived in New York City for most of my entire life, I have adapted to its unique city life. People are always on the go - racing across the streets to their workplace, and yelling for someone to hold the subway doors. This fast-paced lifestyle of the city invigorates me. When it was time to start my college application, NYU was the first university I put down. I chose to apply to NYU’s Dental Hygiene Program in the College of Dentistry.…

As human beings we inherently fear change, especially those of us with social shortcomings, who prefer routine schedules to overwhelmingly new experiences and unpredictability. Such was the case for me. My family moved when I was just turning three years old to Mount Horeb, Wisconsin, a small town of about 8,000 people, located about thirty miles from Madison. Mount Horeb is a quaint suburb known for its Norwegian heritage. It is a fine place to raise a family, but as I got older, I realized that I no longer felt welcomed and sheltered by the small and tightly-knit community, but rather I felt trapped, paralyzed by the limitations of a suffocating town.…

In my research, I would mention four relevant class readings: "New York City and Los Angeles: Government, Electoral Politics, and Political Influence," "Los Angeles and New York City Schools," "At Success Academy Charter Schools, High Scores and Polarizing Tactics," and "Taxes, Budgets, and Managing the Financial Crisis." Those readings can be well related to the strengths and weaknesses of the University of Southern California. Beside the four weekly readings, I would also use other three references to support my argument. The three references are two news reports and an oral interview with my friend steven.…

I want to attend NYU because of the diversity and the possibilities that it brings. With such a wide range of people, culture, and lifestyles, I think it would make it easier to make friends and meet people, whom I hopefully will have continuing connections with throughout my life. Another factor that leads me to want to apply to NYU is that it has more than 300 extracurricular clubs, because of all the options, I would have a variety of opportunities to explore new interests as well as continue with some old ones like lacrosse. In addition through extracurricular activities and classroom work, I aim to further develop my interpersonal and leadership skills. Which I know I have but just need to further cultivate.…

In the book “The Other Wes Moore”, the four main concepts that can affect an individual’s life path is environment, personal responsibility, influence, and expectations. Environment and influences are related to each other because different environments have positive and negative influences within them. Personal responsibilities can vary greatly from person to person; some learn responsibility at a young age by doing chores or younger siblings while others never learn to take responsibilities for themselves or their actions. Then, expectations can be what individuals expect from themselves or what others around them expect them to do. However, I believe the four main concepts that shape a person’s direction of life are common sense, new environments,…

California dreaming can be so much better than California living; at least that’s what I feel sometimes after taking my gap year. This statement I believe is not only applicable to my gap year, but also my experience as a whole. Acknowledging the great presence of collegen in my face and the silky blonde undyed locks on my head, I realize that I have not gone through an immense amount of “life”, but I still know that my experience on this Earth has taught me a couple of things that make me the exceptional person I am. There are a couple of key oppurtunites and hardships that seem to way the heaviest on my being and memory, the death of my beloved grandmother and the so called “gap-year” I’m currently taking on, that have shaped me into a fit student for UT…
