Everyone in Brave New World is encouraged to engage in sexual acts with as many different people as possible on a daily basis and engaging in erotic play begins when they are children. People do not know how to have true relationships because “Without committed partners there is no pain associated with relationship breakup; but neither is their committed love” (Morgan, Shanahan, and Welsh 130). Not ever knowing what love is makes the citizens lose a human quality because love is such an essential human feeling. When one wants to have sex with a particular person, they want to have them. By doing this, Huxley exposes the dehumanization of the citizens. By saying “I’m surprised you haven’t had her” and “I really do advise you try her,” it makes the people seem as lifeless objects, not human beings (Huxley 44, 46). The idea of constantly having sex also diverts the people from problems of society as well because they are not focused on issues but on having sexual intercourse every day. Genetic engineering used to be only used for medical purposes but now people are trying to use it for beauty or enhancement reasons and one example is the Human Growth Hormone, or HGH. This hormone was used to treat children who lacked a natural growth hormone, but now “some parents have requested HGH for children within the normal height range for their age because they want to improve their chances in competitive basketball” (Frankel 34). Although this idea with competitive sports does not apply to the people of Brave New World, it applies to the idea of taking genetic engineering too far on citizens. If people are able to change their child from the way that he or she is intended to be, they “are not parents; they are consumers, and distinctions long recognized between reproduction and production begin to fade” (Frankel 35). People are also diverted from issues on a daily basis and these include “mood-altering pharmaceuticals, artificial reproduction, mindless entertainment, and meaningless sexual escapades” (Morgan, Shanahan, and Welsh 133). People care more about celebrities rather than economic problems or other problems plaguing the world. Could these threats, if continued on the path that they are
