The images that usually come to mind when one thinks of heroes is of people in the military, fire department, and sometimes even police officers. Although these people display courage in putting their life on the line for others, they are not the images that come to my mind when I think of the word hero. Real heroes are people that society never hears about.
Heroes stand up for the truth despite the consequences. A young man in his early twenties once told me that his teenage sister had just done the bravest thing that anyone in their family had ever done. I will never forget the conditions that large family had to live in. They were kept segregated from society and had to hide their lifestyle because “normal” people would never understand. The young man who was so proud of his younger sister’s courage did not even realize his own courageousness. His sister had stood up and told the truth but he was the one who had the conviction to call the authorities on a man they had been raised to believe was holier than man. Although he had moved away from his childhood home and was successfully supporting himself, he never forgot his siblings still living in that lifestyle. He not only swam but he floated to the top. Today he owns a beautiful home just blocks from his childhood home where his family lives, and he opens his home up to his siblings that are willing to have a hidden relationship with him despite their father’s dictates. He is a musician that creates and produces music out of his home, and he teaches any of his younger siblings express an interest in music. He has paid off the mortgage on his house and has been saving every extra bit of money with his siblings in mind. He has saved up enough money with the intent to be able to purchase another home for his siblings when the time comes. He also sends money back to support his family, who although they have ex-communicated him are more than willing to accept his money. At fifteen he learned to survive and also began planning an escape route for his
