Reporter Parsa Javan looks at the incredible, yet terrifying journey that David Fengel took to find freedom physically and emotionally.
David Fengel was held captive by a communist Russian camp for nearly all his childhood. While we take it for granted, in the camp food and water were a great privilege to have. Freedom was not even reachable. He was unquestionably living inside a cage.
David was feeling eager to tell me about the night he escaped. A guard from the camp had decided to help David escape. One evening, when David was told the amazing news by the guard, he did not know how to deal with this situation. He started talking about when it was time for him to chose to be free or chained up forever. He added that the man commanded, “When you see me strike a match, the current will be cut off and you can climb over- you’ll have half a minute for it, no more.” David desired freedom, but he was afraid to trust the man. He could not make sense of it. Was it a trap or really a path to freedom? David had grown up knowing the man hated him, and when he asked what if he failed the escape, the man added, “That’ll be none of my business. I have to leave here tomorrow, and whatever my successor may decide to do about you, I shan’t be able to interfere.” Thinking back about that night, David was so glad to have chosen this action and taken that first step to freedom. He could not have spent the rest of his life in that camp. you could feel and see his emotions. you could see he was thinking about what would have happened if he had not taking that chance all those years ago just by looking at him.
