Personal Narrative: Fargo County Jail Home

I look through the thick cold glass of the Fargo county jail house. On the other side, a man that I had known my entire life was now unrecognizable. His eyes were bloodshot from a lack of sleep as he sat in the chair before me as if he was on death row.

At the time I thought my uncle was giving up on life, I've never seen a man so low then when he sat across from me in the prison that day. I always believed that he had so much more to offer in life. I believe everyone can be happy and successful in today's world. I know it sounds cliché but if you put your mind to something it be accomplished.

Nevertheless, he was released, and began again with a new outlook on life. He found a job as a salesman at Hawley Ford. He had found his dream job and wasn’t let this opportunity slip through his fingers. His hard work paid off for him when he was named manager of the store a few years later. I've never seen a man work so hard. I told him one day, "you know maybe your time in jail is just what you needed" and he replied "your right Ben, it made me not take life for granted. I appreciate the little things in life now that I once lost everything."

He wanted to do that in Hawley but that wasn’t in the cards. He was presented the position of owner at Park Rapids Ford. He would be forced to separate from everyone he knew including all his family who lived in Fargo. Naturally, he wasn’t sure about what his plan of action should be, and asked the entire family. We knew his dream was to own his store and that these opportunities come once in a lifetime. He never got to make a verdict; he was fired a week later from his manger position in Hawley. His owner there learned about his job decision. This left him with one choice, he was now the owner of Park Rapids

Throughout the memoir, A Question of Freedom, Dwayne Betts had faced a lot of obstacles and limited choices/decisions behind bars in a Fairfax County Jail in Virginia. There are many reasons why others define Betts as a “felon,” but he describes himself as a “success,” Betts chose himself as a “learner,”.
