Daphnis And Chloe By Elizabeth Jane Gardner: Art Analysis

It takes a very special painting to evoke a response in me, but when it does, it is unforgettable. I have to admit, looking at and studying artwork is not my favorite thing in the world. However, if I have the chance to learn about the artwork I am observing and know what I am seeing instead of just paint on paper, it suddenly sparks an interest in me. As soon as I saw Daphnis and Chloe, I almost could not take my eyes off of it. The scenery, the 3D perspective, and the incredibly textured clothing in Elizabeth Jane Gardner’s 1882 oil painting Daphnis and Chloe was an extraordinary scene of forbidden, innocent love that captured my heart.
This incredible piece of artwork depicts a young couple in the woods lovingly gazing at each other ever

There is a visible path off to the right side of the painting that suggests that is where the couple came from. The boulder that the girl is sitting on looks rough and covered with weeds. There is a tenderness and lifelike quality in the trees behind them. The trees are full and green making it look around springtime. Even the bouquet of flowers that the young man is holding are a pretty pink, red, and white. It is not an overwhelming amount of green, though. It is almost needed to balance out her stark white dress. The young man’s dark clothing and the path behind him help to balance out the picture as well. Such detail was put into just the background of the picture, which is amazing.
Another thing that is really impressive is the 3D perspective of the painting. It literally looks like someone took a picture of this scene. The light coming from the left of the painting creates shadows that make it so much more realistic. Her arms come across as real flesh and blood arms versus a flat stick figure-like picture. It’s almost as if everything in this painting except the couple is being looked at through a hazy lens and the people are real living, breathing

“there is a spectacular spiral of lemon peel […] cut so thin as to be translucent, a slice of the warmth and energy pouring into this room we’ll never see” (Doty 35). In his essay, “Still Life with Oysters and Lemon”, Mark Doty is captivated by a painting in the Met by Jan Davidsz de Heem, a painter from the 17th century. Although Heem’s paintings are hundreds of years old, the feeling of intimacy lingers in the room, brought to light by the lemons Heem paints. Doty is drawn to the painting, describing in loving detail each “amber inch of wine, dewy grapes, curl of a lemon peel” (Doty 34) and cannot help but examine how the painting makes him question the very nature of humanity. How we both crave intimacy, yet long to be independent of others,…

In the following essay I’m going to compare and contrast two 17th century artworks – “Las Meninas” by Diego Velazquez (1656) and “The Allegory of Painting” by Johannes Vermeer. Paintings depict artists working on a portrait, however, in Velasquez’s work the viewer is the person who is being painted and in Vermeer’s the viewer is just an observer of the artistic process. The only reason the observer knows that he is the center object of the future fictional painting is in the mirror on the back wall. The couple in the reflection is King Philip IV and his wife, Mariana. (Foucault, 8).…

This paper will discuss two oil paintings created by Francisco de Zurbarán (Spain, 1650) and Henry Oshawa Tanner (France, 1898) that depict the popular religious scene known as the Annunciation. In the Christian faith, the Annunciation refers to a celebration of when Gabriel appeared before the Virgin Mary to inform her that she would conceive the son of God. Both artists describe the same incident, sharing the same basic subject matter and similar visual arrangement. However, in attempting to produce an illusion of reality, the artists render the subject matter in comparatively unique styles regarding specific imagery, form, color, and light.…

Mary Cassatt’s Child Picking a Fruit, painted in 1893, shows an intimate moment between a mother and child. Immediately after seeing this painting you can feel the loving connection between the subjects. A green background supports a mother in a pink dress holding what can be assumed as her nude baby son. The pair stand under the branches of an apple tree. The child is reaching for the fruit as the mother holds down the branch to help.…

The action takes place outside the city in front of a large boulder, and there is a church seen in the distance. The mood of the painting is very bleak and dull. His outstretched arms form a V line.…

The painting is in form of asymmetrical balance, although both the left and right contain similar elements, which are a humanoid figure and a tree, the visual weight is heavier on the right due to the usage of a more saturated colour, which creates a more intense contrast between the red of the humanoid figure and the green of the tree nearby. Moreover, the size of the forms mentioned above is also larger than those of the left, and thus also contribute to the heavier visual weight. In terms of movement and rhythm, as a viewer myself, I would first look at the humanoid figure on the right, then follow his gaze to look up to the trees and then to the sky above, then to the door on the left and then to the tree and humanoid figure on the left.…

Andy Wachowskis (1999} For setting we realise that the play takes place in a white room which is known as the construct and depth perception in that room never ends. I was drawn to this painting due to its simplistic design and vibrant colors that forces the viewer to keep looking. The painting attracted my attention and every time I looked at it, I felt as if I found something new about it every time. As I continued to examine the painting its complexity continued to grow with every minute that I looked at it. Also, the size of the painting was large compared to the others in the gallery immediately making me feel that the painting had more significance and prestige than the others around it. The combination of the designs, the color and the size, overall made this painting an obvious choice for my research paper.…

The painting portrays a couples dressed in formal attire for a picnic on the mountains just as the title describes it. The woman is sitting down while looking into space. She’s holding a fruit on her right hand, and reaching into an orange with the other. The man is lying beside her with his head resting on his hand and the other in front of his chest as he looks directly into the viewer’s eyes.
