Titus’s father woke up and grabbed the machete that always laid beside his bed, went down the hall in a flurry of movement and struck out at the soldiers. The soldiers looked up at him from their feast, with the madness in his eyes that came with the abundant taste of wine, and quickly killed him. Titus’s mother awakened by the sound of the racket down the hall, jumped up and raced down the hall, where she was met with the sight of drunkards raiding her kitchen. She picked up her iron skillet that rested beside the wall and laid waste to the bottoms and elbows of the men. Only after they had beaten her and tied her to a chair did she notice the body of her dead husband, and cried out in lamentation. She kicked and struggled to no avail in the end the soldier with a grisly beard silenced her permanently with a swift slice of her neck with her own kitchen knife. Titus woke in the morning to the sight of the torn up house and bodies of his father and mother splayed on the kitchen

Ben Bernanke is a economist at the Brookins who Served two terms as Chairman of the Federal Reserve. Ben And Odysseus both were in a journey to getting some place it was called home. If we were all great leaders, the world would be a pretty boring place. In Plato’s The Odyssey, Odysseus, the king of Ithaca, gets lost at sea on his way back from the Battle of Troy. His leadership and strength helped guide him and his crew back home to Ithaca. There are many times where Odysseus displays his godlike strength but is that all it takes to be a good leader? After brutally sailing through Charybdis and Scylla and getting close to the island of the Sun, Eurylochos says, with mutiny on his mind, "You are a hard man Odysseus.…

In Homer’s epic, The Odyssey, Odysseus is finally released from Calypso after seven years. Odysseus proceeded to lead his men on his way back home to be reunited with his wife, Penelope. Today, Homer is globally seen as a great leader for his men, but his clear demonstration of pride, daringness, and his pettiness made him a horrible leader. One of the biggest weaknesses for leaders is having too much pride, and Odysseus has more than enough of that, as shown in the Cyclops. Odysseus’ crew was caught by a Cyclops, but when he got away he decided to insult the Cyclops (The Cyclops. 476).…

In “The Odyssey”, Odysseus’s hubris is an advantage because it tricks individuals into viewing the almighty epic hero as more of an iconic and courageous figure. When Odysseus and his crew, cleverly fight off and get past the horrendous cyclops Polyphemus, Odysseus bravely taunts the beast to make sure he knows never to attack him or his crew again. In fury, Polyphemus pounds out to Odysseus’s boat, forcing Odysseus to get the “longest boat hook out” and begin “fending off” his crew (95-96). This act of fearlessness shows Odysseus’s crew that he’s willing to protect them for the future, even if that means sacrificing his own safety. Any other person would’ve taken that get out of jail free card, and quickly got off the island, waiting like bait for Polyphemus to strike again.…

A hero is anyone who has the ability to express themselves. In the past, the definition of a hero was much more narrow than in the current day. "Heroes are ordinary people who make themselves extraordinary" this is a quote from Gerard Way, a famous musician with an insightful viewpoint, regarding heroism. I think this quote represents heroism very simply, yet in the truest way. Homer, in the epic poem, The Odyssey, suggests that Odysseus is a hero. Homer develops this assertion by pointing out Odysseus's heroic characteristics in the various trials that he faces. The speaker's purpose is to inform the audience of what true heroes are like and the traits that they may possess in order for them to understand that Odysseus is the ideal example of a hero, regardless of his flaws.…

The famous epic poem by Homer, The Odyssey, tells of Odysseus’ tumultuous journey back to his home on the island of Ithaka. Odysseus, the main character in the epic poem, appears to be the hero slaying the monsters, but as his journey continues it becomes more difficult to distinguish who the monster really is. Upon closer inspection, the true monster is not one of the various mythical creates Odysseus faces, but is instead Odysseus himself. Passages from book nine and book 22 of The Odyssey, demonstrate how the true monster is actually Odysseus. Odysseus and his men arrive on an island, in book nine, and enter a cave seeking to steal any valuable loot they can find.…

In the epic poem The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus demonstrates bravery as a trait of exceptional leadership when he fearlessly rescues his crew from permanently being transformed by Circe’s magical potion. After Eurylokhos, one of Odysseus’s crewmen, leads a search group onto the island of Circe, he returns from Circe’s hall so horrified he is unable to speak, with “blinding tears” pooling in his eyes (Homer 172, 272). By questioning Eurylokhos about the events that took place at Circe’s house, Odysseus learns his men are in some sort of danger, and therefore is determined to retrieve them at once. Odysseus commands Eurylokhos to lead him back to the house from which he came, but Eurylokhos begs Odysseus to let him stay behind, and Odysseus,…

This doesn’t lend to Titus being more sympathetic in the eyes of the audience, but it does paint him as a round character going from the cold father that had no interest in the Roman throne, to enacting passionate revenge on Tamora for her family’s actions. In fact, it’s possible to look at his brutal actions as the culmination of his fall to the brutal style of the Goths themselves. All three characters require their anagnorisis as catalysts for the changes they go…
