Brenda Greene approaches Their Eyes Are Watching God as a teachable moment through a novel. This moment from a book, she has turned into as semester course. Greene realizes through her colleagues that teachers are taken aback by the subject matter. One of the questions that she is asked, “I teach a class of predominantly white students, how do I get them interested in the book?”(268). Greene feels as though the educators have a responsibility to bring cultural diversity to the classroom, which in turn will allow the student to engage in a thinking manner that will expand their view of the world around them. Her answer to her colleagues is that while there are many cultural issues and “conflicts between different races” there is a responsibility
