Summary: Their Eyes Were Watching God

Janie a young African American lady was faced with a choice between, love, romance, happiness and stability, sensibility and family approval. One man an old farmer asked for her hand in marriage. Janie knew if she said yes she would be taken care of but not always happy. A young man with lots of money how ever, stole Janie 's heart and gave her the choice to risk her future and run away with him. This risk would allow janie 's romantic desires to run wild and let her child like freedom sing. Janie chose everlasting joy over a reality of security. Janie 's Nanny only wanted the best for her precious Janie. So Nanny set out to find Janie a husband that will take care of her financially and will never leave her. Logan went behind Janie to her Nanny and asked for Janies hand in marriage. Without the consultation of Janie Nanny said yes. When Logan and Jaine eloped she built up a resentment towards Logan for breaking her dreams of having a fairy tale life of love and happiness. “ She knew now that marriage did not make love. Janie 's first dream was dead, so she became a woman.”( pg. 25)
Logan left the property one day to go buy a mule. While Logan was gone Janie was outside working the land when a charming much younger man was whistling and walking down the long dirt road. He was dressed in fancy expensive clothes of silk and lace. Janie desperately want to get his attention. Ah 'll be down dis road uh little after sunup tomorrow mornin ' to wait for you. You come go wid me. Den all de rest of yo ' natural life you kin live lak you oughta. Kiss me and shake yo ' head. When you do dat, yo ' plentiful hair breaks lak day." ( Pg. 29-30) Janie debated all night to make the risk. Throw away all expectations Nanny had made for her.The next morning when Logan commands Janie to move some manure around Janie runs out the front door and flings her apron in a shrub and the feeling of freedom floods her spirit. She runs down the road leaving her past behind and watching her future pack up the buggy expecting her in fine clothing and a smiling
