Firstly being aware of differences in culture in the workplace will often be enough to keep conflict at bay and speaking with a person or different culture clearly and using good non-verbal skills (Open colleges, 2013 pg50). Being open minded and non-judgemental of others will also solve or stop conflict. Respecting that each person is an individual and has individual view points and ways of thinking is very important in the workplace. Understanding and learning about other cultures and taking an interest and observing their values and ideals will make the workplace healthier leading to better work productivity and happier work environments. Using an interpreter will make negotiating and solving conflict easier and more efficient, not just to interpret different languages but also as a way to understand different non-verbal skills and facial expressions as these can lead to conflict if not understood properly. The best person to approach when wanting to discuss conflict in the workplace is a supervisor who should already know about conflict resolution (Open colleges, 2013 pg53). Workplace colleague’s or mentors who speaks different languages and are different religions can be invaluable to helping workers understand different cultural backgrounds and customs and help everyone communicate better which can solve many cross cultural conflicts or even prevent them from occurring (Andy Molinsky 2013,par 8).
I have learned that solving cross cultural communication issues is rewarding and can lead to better communication in the future. Also that every worker may not be able to get along nicely but it doesn’t mean there cannot be good effort put into trying to communicate better and tolerate each other if not become close friends or colleagues in the end.
