Summary of Contents
Mahaney begins the first chapter by analyzing Timothy’s thoughts and reactions upon receiving his final letter from his mentor, Paul. Amongst the feeling of grief, Timothy must have known that just as Paul had dedicated his life to sharing the gospel of Christ and Him crucified, he must also commit to the same truth. Paul lived his life by the message that Jesus died so that all people could be brought back to a holy God. He always kept this ideal at the center of everything that he did, and it always showed in his teaching. He makes his point, writing, “If you’re single, live a cross centered life. If you’re married, build a cross centered marriage. If you have children, practice cross centered parenting” (155). These are very important topics that people in any stage of life can relate to. It would have served Mahaney well to dive into these issues and teach specifics on how to live out these cross centered relationships. He could do this by including scripture or stories from his personal experience as a father and husband. Perhaps this was not the main objective of the book, but one might say that the writer’s goal could be better accomplished by spending more time teaching on these topics from the standpoint of a cross centered
