Two different goals that the criminal justice system has are deterrence and rehabilitation/reintegration. There are two types of deterrence in criminal justice. The first is general deterrence, where criminal justice exemplifies what happens to people that do commit a crime, which the crime can be specific or general. In fear of being subjected to the same punishment(s), people would deter themselves away from committing that crime. General deterrence makes a display of criminals, and what happens when they have been caught. This display aims to deter other people from committing crime(s) so they do not become in a similar situation as the criminal exemplified. Specific deterrence cracks down on a specific criminal, giving the criminal severe punishments to make them regret their crime, and to avoid the crime in the future.
Why are victims considered the first “gatekeepers” of the criminal justice system?
The victims are considered the first “gatekeepers” of the criminal justice system because if the victims did not report their crimes, the criminal justice system would be unaware of the crimes committed while they are not on patrol or surveying, and therefore would never become involved in a crime. The victims introduce the system to the crime, as actual gatekeepers do to visitors of an area.

Probable cause is the likeliness that a person committed a crime is high enough to be a suspect, or even arrest the person. They’re likely positive for the criminal justice system as the criminals are being dealt with by a different program so the system can work with other cases. Society may also look at these boot camps positively as the criminals are being dealt with. The boot camps themselves may not treat individuals in the best way the criminal can learn not to commit crime and function as a law-abiding citizen. The boot camps may be excessively harsh on a person, or not affect them at all, depending on the individual. It can be comparable to torture in some cases, but many may not care because those being tortured are criminals, who may deserve some pain. Unfortunately, this pain may make the criminals worse individuals, and more apt to commit crimes, or drive them mentally insane, though this all depends on the boot camps and individuals.
