Male crickets make chirps/song in the attempt to attract a female so they can reproduce. The crickets create the chirp noises by rubbing their wings closest to their head (forewings). The song mentioned above (calling song) is the song the crickets use to attempt to attract a female. A cricket varies the number of chirps in a certain amount of time. Using the chirps you can even tell the temperature. This is called Dolbear’s Law and was created by Amos Dolbear. Different species of crickets have a different number of chirps that can be used to determine the temperature. The American field cricket’s calculation to determine …show more content…
As stated above in the equipment needed for safety is gloves and safety glasses. The reason you would need the gloves is to avoid germs or disease if any on the crickets. The safety glasses would be needed because to have access to a variable temperature oven you can mostly only find them in a lab. Set the variable temperature oven to 10°C. After the temperature is reached place the field cricket in the oven and the female cricket outside of the oven. Determine whether the cricket is chirping in the oven, raise the temperature by 5°C until the cricket starts to chirp. Record the number of chirps at each temperature for the cricket for one minute. Then continue this process but increasing the temperature by 5°C until the cricket stops chirping. Plot number of chirps per minute against temperature on a graph to show the trend between temperature and a cricket's chirping rate. Repeat steps 2,3 and 4 for at least 5 crickets to gain a fair
