Upon entering a helping profession there is much to learn from basic skills to those needed for mastery. The following paragraphs will discuss the skills needed in counseling and conducting an interview. Ranging from the most basic of skills to those needed to conduct a crisis intervention. The importance of understanding these skills and foundation tools are essential to conducting an interview and ultimately the helping process itself. The skills learned will be applied to but are not limited to, interviewing, counseling, and psychotherapy. There is a basic strength-based framework to follow in the helping process. Which is made up as follows: Relationship → Story and Strength → Goals → Restory → Action, all of these will help to ensure becoming an effective counselor/interviewer. Listening not only enables one to collect needed data it will show the client your interest. Listening skills or attending behavior include visual contact, vocal qualities, verbal tracking, and body language. No client will be the same or have the same situation, so it is important to adjust listening skills. Making the appropriate eye contact when listening or speaking is the visual contact of attending skills. In Northern-European American culture making more eye contact while listening is seen as a sign of interest. Then on the other hand making less while speaking to the client. Though, it is important to understand that not every culture practices this type of eye contact. Researching unfamiliar cultures customs will help prepare the interviewer/counselor for the first session. For instance African Americans prefer to make more contact while talking and less while listening. While keeping cultural differences in mind, individual differences will often be greater.
