Over the decades, the concept of corporate social responsibility (CSR) has continued to grow in its importance and significance. It has been the subject of considerable debate, commentary, theory building and research. It has developed and evolved in both academic as well as practitioner communities worldwide. The roots of the concept of CSR as it is known today have a long history which indicates that business people have paid increasing attention to the concerns of society. Abettor understanding of the transformation of the concept not only contributes to a better understanding of the meaning of CSR but also to a better idea of what should be the role of business in development and their contributions to society..
Throughout the years, literature on CSR across the global has defined it using many different terminologies, making it perplexing to agree upon a commonly defined term because of the breadth at its scope of Such differences in definitions can attributed to political systems, financial systems, education and labor systems as well as cultural beliefs.
Bowen, 1953 (1) defined corporate social responsibility as “The obligations of businessmen to pursue those policies, to make these decisions or to follow those lines of actions which are desirable in terms of the objectives and values of our society” and argued that businessmen are responsible for the consequences of their actions in a sphere somewhat wider than corporate financial…
