Conflict In Whale Rider

Heroes come in a variety of ages and different genders. In the movie Whale Rider, Paikea is a hero because she goes through a series of obstacles in her path of becoming the leader of a tribe, in a small village called Whangara. In the beginning of the movie, a mother gives birth to two children, but only one survives. Paikea, named after an ancestor who once led the tribe, survives but is a girl the other child, who is a boy dies. Because the boy died, there was no first born son to lead the tribe to “lead people out of the darkness.” After, it shows Paikea’s grandfather, Koro, and his great disappointment. Pai shows strength by finishing her speech and trying to pull her emotions together. Finally, after the whales hear Paikea’s calls, they beach themselves onto the shores. Pai shows strength in this scene because once again. Koro does not allow her to touch the whale because he believes that she has done enough damage. Once the people leave, she gets onto the whale and the whale swims into the ocean. She shows courage and selflessness because she states that she is not afraid to die. She was willing to die to provide happiness for the other people and to save the whale. Only then, does Pai’s grandmother reveal to Koro that she had found the necklace and Koro realises that she had been their leader all along. In conclusion, Pai is a hero because she fought to gain recognition by standing up to Koro, she overcomes all her obstacles in the course of this movie, she shows great strength after being abandoned at the concert, and because she was willing to sacrifice herself to improve the lives of other people and bring them happiness. Paikea shows several heroic traits throughout the movie and at the end brought happiness to her
