Choose a novel or play that depicts a conflict between a parent (or parental figure) and a son or daughter. Write an essay in which you analyze the sources of the conflict and explain how the conflict contributes to the meaning of the work.

“The very basic core of a man 's living spirit is his passion for adventure. The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun.” Fresh out of college with a 3.7 GPA, Christopher McCandless filled up his beloved Datsun and headed west for Arizona. He donated the $24,000 in his bank account to OXFAM, a charity committed to feeding the hungry, left a curt note to his family, saying he was “going to disappear for a while,” and started his journey towards living a simple, hitch-hiker-nomad lifestyle. Through his travels, he tramped through swamps in Southern California, paddled through river beds and trickling springs, crossed the Mexico border illegally, and after stopping back in California for a while, hitch-hiked back to Alaska – the place his dreams were made of. Park rangers found his body in a bus on his 122th day in the wilderness (surviving on all but hunting and foraging), with a note crying for help.
