Confidentiality In A Group: Group Analysis

Decent Essays
There is no absolute certainty that a group leader can ensure confidentiality within a group. Group leaders cannot control what others do outside the group. In fact group leaders cannot control what a person will say in a session. This is one reason that it is critical that a group leader has the proper training (Corey, Corey & Corey, 2014). As Corey, Corey & Corey (2014) explain that new therapists are at times put into situations to conduct group meetings they aren’t experienced in or have the option of expressing their comfort levels.

It is important for a group leader to explain the confidentiality arrangement within the group at the beginning of each meeting. The group leader can ask if anyone is not able to keep the confidentiality

Once invited in, I will shake her hand while looking her in the eye in an effort to make her comfortable and letting her know we are equals. After a brief introduction of who I am and the role I will play in her mental health treatment, I will make it clear that our meetings are private and behind closed doors. I will go over the items that require informed consent during our first session which include, but are not limited to, confidentiality, the limits of confidentiality, exemptions to privilege, an outline of the projected course of therapy, client's right to terminate at any time, and disclosure of possible risks (and rewards) of therapy. In addition, I will ask the client to consent to treatment, disclose the client's right and responsibility to make her own relational decisions, and last but not least, discuss mandated reporting. Through all this, I will aim to build trust through transparency and responsiveness.…

Another case wen is necessary to share this information is when the client is a minor or a person who is unable to give us the voluntary consent. Anxiety is usually provoked by the unknown , so this allows each member to get accustomed to the feel of the room and group before anything is said. I then want them to share about their first impressions of the room. This will lead to discussion and may produce some conflict that the counselors can model how to respond in a empathetic and honest way. For example, if one of the members have visual lesions a member may mention that they noticed it. This could be an opportunity to talk openly about fears and first impressions that are common to the group and individuals.…
