According to Piaget, a 3-year-old preschooler is in Pre-operational state, which is from 2 until about 7 years. This state marked the ability to construct mental representations of experience but the children in this state are hampered by egocentrism—an ability to see the world from others’ point of view. Young children can mentally represent and refer to objects and events with words or pictures and they can pretend. However they can’t conserve, logically reason, or simultaneously consider many characteristics of an object. On the other hand, a 9-year-old student is in Concrete operational stage, which is from 7 to 11 years old. During this time, children gain a better understanding of mental operations. In addition to that, Piaget used a number of creative and clever techniques to study the mental abilities of children. One of the famous techniques to demonstrate egocentrism involved using a three-dimensional display of a mountain scene. Often referred to as the “Three Mountain Task”, children are asked to choose a picture that showed the scene they had observed. According to Piaget’s theory of cognitive development, there are multiple stages of cognitive development in children. Children are not miniature adults; instead, they their views of the world differ fundamentally from adults, which is rational, because children lack the experience of adults. Piaget is a stage theorist, and thought that development happened in distinct stages rather than continuously. Development consists of equilibration finding the balance between experience of the world and thoughts about the world. Development involves assimilation – the absorption of new experience into existing schemas and accommodation, the alteration of schemas to better fit the world.
