Summary: The Classroom Setting

The classroom setting is for, four-year-old preschool aged children. The idea behind the preschool comes from Piaget’s theory that children learn by a process of adaptation, assimilation, and then accommodation. During the first step, they interpret new stimulation in ways that fit with what they already know. As the new information assimilates, the existing knowledge modifies and creates a better match. Lastly, the child’s understanding gradually changes from the interaction with the environment. During this interaction, the child will be able to accommodate and learn (Broderick & Blewitt, 2015, p. 79).

Each of the stations will focus on having an activity that will engage the child’s interest, support skill development, and ultimately lead them to accommodation. The stations will rotate on a weekly basis to allow for maximum experiences within the school year. There will be tables and chairs for open play areas and snack time. The classroom will have child sized couches placed in-between the stations so that the children can have a place to relax, read a book, or take some quiet time. Supplies for each station will stored and organized in shelf units behind each station. Each day one activity will be setup at the station. The remaining supplies stay stored for use on another day. There will be a variety of books including pictures books, storybooks that have repetitive stories and rhymes, animal books, and popup books. In addition, music and games. Station 2 will build gross motor skills. There will be active play toys such as push/pull toys, ride on toys, balls, slide with ladder, rocking boat, rope ladder, sand, and water materials. Station 3 will build fine motor skills. There will be finger paints, playdough, cookie cutters, small objects to sort and classify, letter/number/shape magnetics, dolls/stuffed animals with play clothing, and puzzles. Station 4 will build self-expression. There will be play setting/people, dress up clothes, household play items like a telephone. Additional stations will build sensory, building, art, and nature. There will be large blocks, workbench, safety googles, sandpaper, cooking experiences, art supplies, chalk, sandbox, bubbles, and water toys (Jalongo & Isenberg, 2010). The State of Oregon has requirements on the child ratios for childcare center staff. The ratio is a minimum of one adult to every ten children. This preschool will be exceeding the requirement and offering a minimum of one adult to every four children. This will create additional one-on-one interaction opportunities with the teachers throughout the day.
