“He can do anything you tell him, said George. He’s a good skinner. He can rassle bags, drive a cultivator. He can do anything. Just give him a try (Steinbeck 22). This quote shows that George is the spokesperson for Lennie. Lennie wouldn’t be able to say all that stuff about himself, and George is good about letting people know how good Lennie really is. “I got you! You can’t keep a job and you lose me ever’ job I get. Jus’ keep me shovin’ all over the country. And that ain’t the worst. You get in trouble. You do bad things and I got to get you out (Steinbeck 11). Lennie would be no where without George. Lennie has mental problems and would never be able to get a job by himself. Even though he works the equivalent of about 2 or 3 men, he doesn’t have the social skills get himself a job. That’s where George comes in to take care of him. “Hes sure a hell of a good worker. Strong as a bull” (Steinbeck 22). This is why where George wouldn’t be able to get a job without Lennie by his side. George is not a very big guy so if he just came and asked for a job by himself, he would never get it. As all the other workers would say, “Funny how you an’ him string along together” (Steinbeck 39). They don’t understand that George and Lennie will always stay together. They have grown up together and will always need each other by their side. “Why he’d do any damn thing I tol’ him. If I tol’ him to walk over a cliff, over he’d go” (Steinbeck 40). Lennie wouldn’t be able to survive without George in his life. He pretty much shows him the way every day. As George said, “We got a future. We got somebody to talk to that gives a damn about us. We don’t have to sit in no bar blowin’ in our jack jus’ because we got no place else to go (Steinbeck 14).
