Comparing The Araby And A & P Short Stories Essay

Despite that the Araby and A&P short stories were written in different times, and in different countries, they both have some similarities. One of the main similarities between the two stories is the fact that both main characters are in love with women who don t even know it. The young men in both stories make monetary sacrifices for girls who apparently do not share mutual feelings only to let themselves down. In both stories, the boys went the extra mile to reach the girl they want and both failed.
The boy in Araby is secretly in love with his best friend 's sister who lives in the neighborhood. The secrecy continues as he attempts to observe her without being seen. " Every morning I lay on the front parlous watching her door. The blind was pulled down to within an inch of the sash so that I could not be seen”. (Joyce 729). He is determined to speak to her, however he does not know how to gather his courage to do so. Meanwhile his thoughts are centered around his love and desire for the girl. Her figure defined by the light from the half opened door, her dress swung as she moved her body, and the soft rope of her hair tossed from side to side the light from the lamp opposite our door caught the white curve of her neck, lit up her hair that rested here and, falling, lit up the hand upon the railing. At fell over one side of her and caught the white border of a petticoat, just visible as she stood at ease. (Joyce 729). He eventually spoke with the girl and they eventually…
