Comparing Christianity And Capital Punishment

Improved Essays
Some of the Christains believe that the capital punishment is not an acceptable and appropriate method to punish someone. This is because Christianity is based on forgiveness and compassion. Christianity always teach us to forgive other people and also compass others. This teaching supports the sentence of life imprisonment. Giving the murderer an imprisonment instead of death penalty is another way to forgive some one because it will give him or her a new chance to live their life in a better way and also make him or her able to reflect of what him or her has done to a human being. By forgiving someone, we should also support them as Christainity teaches that “Abolition is in line with support life.” The punishment of death penalty is opposing the general Christian stand, as it told us that every single lif shoud be supported. Therefore we should be supporting the murderer who is willing to change their behaviour and attitude. Christianity also teaches us that only God should create and destroy life. In the Ten Commandments, one of them said, “Thou shalt not kill” (Exodus 21:13). This is a very clear instruction that no one can decide who is going to life or who is going to die. But some of the Christains agree with the capital punishment. However, there are some more biblical passages that had mentioned about this punishment but it did not give a very clear standpoint of whether the capital punishment is an appropriate solution for this crime or not. In the Old Testament Law (which is the Testament Law that Jesus rejected), Exodus 21:12-14 it says: “Anyone who strikes a man and kills …show more content…
As some said that we should be forgiving, supporting and compassing the murderer but some said that the one who killed a human being should be killed as well but it did not tell which way should they be killed

For example, Jeffrey Dahmer was a notorious serial killer and known cannibal who raped, murdered, and dismembered his victims. Instead of facing retributive punishment for his crimes, he was sentenced to multiple life terms and was later killed by an inmate. A person who has taken the life of another purposely and premeditated deserves to face the punishment of death under law. Executing a criminal who murdered another human being offers a way of retribution to the loved ones of the victim because even though they cannot change what has happened or have their loved one back, by seeing justice be served it assures to them that there will be no other victims and families who face the same tragedy, giving them some closure.…

Dick and Perry's lives in the Book, “In Cold Blood,” were portrayed as cold blooded murders in Holcomb. The murders they committed were lethal, brutal, and some may dare to say inhumane. The killing of the Clutter family is the main focus of the book, and although you clearly can justify the fact that Dick and Perry deserve to die for what they did, Truman Capote, the author of the book seems to think that the capital punishment should be stopped and was not necessary on behalf of the murders, I actually disagree. I am totally agree with capital punishment, primarily the death penalty because you do the crime and I believe if it's something incredibly inhuman, vile, and cruel, that you should be killed for it. Longer time asking for salvation and longer time for atoning might actually cause the sinner to be reformed spiritually. Moreover, life sentence might actually grant us the flexibility to set the innocent free while capital punishment does not. If an offender is convicted and given a life sentence then he was proven innocent, the punishment is reversible by setting him free and giving him compensation but if an offender was exonerated and given a death penalty, it would be too late to reverse punishment after the sentence is given. A life sentence is reversible and gives us the flexibility to set the innocent free. For example, in Roy’s case, if Roy was given a life sentence instead of capital punishment he might have been set free when the actual murderer was found.…

Of these is murder. But now the court only sees premeditated murder as an offense worthy of the death penalty. Michael Westmoreland-White and Glen Stassen ask as Christians why we single out premeditated murder out of the 25 other offenses. They believe that Christians who argue biblically for the death penalty base most of their arguments on Genesis 9:6 and Romans 13. They say that if we accept Genesis 9:6 as an argument for the death penalty, we also must not only punish those who premeditate but also people who accidentally kill people, minors, and the mentally retarded people who kill.…

In The Idiot, Fyodor Dostoevsky discloses his views of capital punishment through the portrayal of his character Myshkin. Dostoevsky makes several remarks about the apparent cruelty of the death penalty, typically through the lens of this character. “I believe that to execute a man for murder is to punish him immeasurably more dreadfully than is equivalent to his crime. A murder by sentence is far more dreadful than a murder committed by a criminal. The man who is attacked by robbers at night, in a dark wood, or anywhere, undoubtedly hopes and hopes that he may yet escape until the very moment of his death . .…

The first reason capital punishment should be abolished is it is barbaric, for instance, prisoners are injected with chemicals, much like an animal is when it is euthanized. When a human being is executed in the same manner as an animal it makes a statement of how society values human life. Humans deserve rehabilitation and forgiveness because all are capable of these things all should be given every opportunity to utilize these capabilities, before being put down as if that was beyond possibilities. Speaking of possibilities, the second reason the death penalty is barbaric, there are recorded cases of innocent people being executed according to the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, “four percent of prisoners sentenced to…
