From the work of psychiatrist Aaron Beck cognitive- behavior treatment was developed. Cognitive-behavioral theories all share the same assumption “human behavior is based on what we think and believe” (Early,2017). Cognitive-behavior therapy helps the person change negative cognitions, understand cognition, with this process it brings change to behavior (Early,2017). The theory of cognitive behavior relates to the patient Jim because, he possesses the symptoms of shyness from boyhood. His anxiety comes from his adolescent years.…
This article is about an interview with Judith beck, a director of the Beck Institute for Cognitive therapy and research, and a clinical Associate Professor of Psychology in Psychiatry at University of Pennsylvania. The Beck Institute, trains practitioners and researchers, provides clinical care and involves in research on cognitive therapy. She was interviewed based on her book, “The Beck diet solution: Train Your Brain to think like a Thin Person.” The book basically covers how cognitive techniques can be applied to improve one’s health and life, concentration on weight loss. According to Judith Beck, the cognitive therapy was developed by her father Aaron Beck and is a based on the idea that the way people see their experience influences their emotional, behavioral and physiological responses.…
Therapies are often developed to treat a specific disorder or specific populations. The needs of the client are taken into account when these treatments are developed. All treatments are based off of theories of pathology from various perspectives such as the behavioral or cognitive perspectives. Cognitive theories argue that it is not just the reward and punishment of conditioning, like in behavioral models, but our cognition shapes our behavior and emotions. In the cognitive model it is believed that causal attributions influence behavior.…
The cognitive approach on the mind and how and what we think affect the way individuals behave. Therapy for this model focuses on thoughts, feelings, and behavior and how they are all…
The Cognitive Perspective is considered to be a relatively new or modern approach in the field of psychology in regards to the study human behavior that started gaining attention around the late 1950s leading to what is also known as the “Cognitive Revolution” during which the definition of psychology started to deviate from the inclination to be classified as a study of behaviour given that pre-1950s, psychology was deemed as the study of behaviour by experimental psychologists who were influenced by the work of psychologists going along the lines of Pavlov’s work which emphasized on behaviorism arguing that the most objectively observable evidence is that which can be seen externally i.e., behavioral (Miller, 2003) The cognitive perspective allowed researches to come up with conclusions regarding the characteristics of cognitive processes through the observation of certain behaviours in terms of consistency in behaviour, measurable by the rate of forgetting and reaction. The major emphasis of the cognitive perspective leans towards the study of cognitive function as the name suggests or in other words, the study of mental processes inclusive of but not limited to; attention, memory, language, perception and thinking. (McLeod, S. A. 2008)…
In the original cognitive framework of depression treatment, Beck (1964) postulated that individuals’ depressed mood is primarily influenced by their viewpoints toward the situation rather than the situation itself. In brief, Beck’s theory hypothesized that it is the negative cognitive/thinking patterns that lead to the symptoms of depression (Beck, 1967).…
As a result of this study, other researchers began formulating theories of their own. McIntosh and Fisher were two theorist who challenged Beck’s Negative Cognitive Triad. Their theory provided the presumption that there could be more or less than three specific negative thoughts. Their tests, as well as their statistics, determined that there was only one governing negative thought: The Self-Relevant Negative Attitude. They further explain their data when they state, "…it would appear that retaining all three areas of the triad as separate dimensions is not necessary for representing the latent structure of depressive cognition within Beck's framework" (McIntosh & Fischer, 2000, p.156).…
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a form of psychological treatment that aims to examine the relationships between thoughts, emotions, physiological perceptions, and behaviors. According to cognitive theory, the thoughts negative in content trigger the change of mood and behavior. Therefore, how individual thinks influences how she or he feels, which subsequently affects how that person behaves and ultimately the choices that person makes. Pioneered by Aaron T. Beck, the goal of the therapy is to train patients to assess their thinking patterns for biased thoughts, such as negative distortions of depression, or overly positive cognitive triad of mania, and to be able to identify those distorted perceptions when they occur and alter or replace…
We chose to focus our study using a Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) as our theoretical framework. Cognitive behavioral therapy was developed in the 1960’s by Aaron Beck and combines cognitive and behavioral therapies. In CBT, an individual's thoughts, feelings, and behavior are all interrelated. CBT helps an individual build a set of skills to be aware of their thoughts and emotions. An individual will learn to how recognize a situation, thought or behavior that may be influencing their emotions as well as reduce their dysfunctional thoughts or behavior (Cully & Teten, 2008)…
The theory that I chose to use in order to inform Ms. Arlington’s treatment plan was Cognitive-Behavioral Theory (CBT). The use of CBT is evident throughout Ms. Arlington’s treatment plan. The focus on cognitive distortions and behavioral modification, as well as the insightfulness of Ms. Arlington, made CBT a good choice to utilize. Ms. Arlington’s inability to practice positive self-talk and her irrational thought patterns concerning her parenting are two of the reasons that maintaining sobriety has been a challenge for her. Therefore it was my hope that by utilizing cognitive restructuring, cognitive coping, and behavioral coping skills that Ms. Arlington would able to maintain sobriety and reunification with her son.…
The seven different approaches to psychology are the Biological Approach, the Behavioral Approach, the Psychodynamic Approach, the Humanistic Approach, the Cognitive Approach, the Evolutionary Approach, and the Sociocultural Approach. These seven strategies help to explain how some people may become depressed as well. The biological approach describes behavior and mental processes by focusing on the body, and the functions of the nervous system and brain; which also works alongside with neuroscience: the scientific study of the nervous system and how its functions affect behaviors, thoughts, and feelings. Through this approach, psychologists can determine that a…
sychologists introduced a number of diverse approaches in order to understand human nature and behaviour. There are different ways of explaining phenomena, which is why there are different approaches. These different approaches include Cognitive and Psychodynamic. The Cognitive approach began to revolutionise psychology in the late 1950s and early 1960s.…
I have always held the belief that our thinking heavily affects our emotions. As I have learned more about psychotherapy and theoretical orientations, that belief has been strengthened and backed by research. Cognitive Behavior Therapy is the theoretical orientation that I would use for counseling. It holds a focus on our thinking but also confronts problematic behaviors. CBT is a short-term approach which combines the methods and principles of Behavior Therapy and Cognitive Therapy.…
The behavioral, humanistic, and cognitive perspectives each have vastly different views and theories. Each one analyzes and tackles psychological disorders in it’s own unique way. For example, there is the case of Jake. Jake is a student who has recently been diagnosed with anxiety disorder after starting harder classes for his major. Each perspective has different views on the origins of his anxiety and how to treat it.…
I find the field of cognitive psychology very interesting. There are many areas in cognitive psychology that are not fully understood. Therefore, there are many areas within cognitive psychology that can be explored. Which makes experimenting in this area exciting.…
