A little flame playfully flickered in the surrounding darkness; quietly dancing and singing with innocence. None bore witness to the simple, yet zealous performance that was displayed. Gradually the darkness stalked the flame, and in one foul swoop it snuffed the light. A watchtower lay engulfed in darkness.
A young man sat atop the platform of another watchtower, observing the surrounding settlement of Darreth. His mind begun to wonder as he peered over the rooftops of the surrounding buildings. There would have to be at least, two hundred people asleep in the small town. He recalled how exciting it felt to accept the night watch. That was until he met Clifton, the laziest watchman he had ever known. Just as the man’s thoughts had, his gaze also shifted towards Clifton’s watchtower. As the young guardsman reached the ladder that led up the tower, something caused him to freeze motionless. A terrifying cold entity brushed past his broad shoulders. His figure immediately began twisting and turning as his trained eyes desperately tried locating the source. The man’s pale face showed a great sign of terror, which was mimicked by his shaking hands. Alas, nothing was seen by the young guard and after a moment he ignorantly dismissed it and continued with his original task. The guard looked up to the tower’s platform and shouted “Clifton!” no response followed. The silence served to further frustrate the young guard.
