Burbank Monologue

And this new man, no longer shackled to anyone who could stir up his anger, became peaceful version of his former self. The irony was not lost on Charlie. He had, on occasion, mused in incredulity when he thought of how well he managed to emerge from such an ugly predicament.

That is why Charlie was now able to genuinely take care of another human being. He was, in fact, relieved to make the acquaintance of a lively creature was not privy to his past. Joan took only a few weeks to develop a base level of trust for the rugged man. He was not as dirty as the other scavengers, so she knew he was either educated or determined. Both very useful traits for one to possess on the dark streets of what remained of Burbank.

He would take it all in for the last time, and then end his suffering once and for all.

His sweaty hand grabbed the edge of the retaining wall at the top of the overlook path, and he braced himself against it to catch his breathe. He was startled by the activity that greeted his ascent. Charlie saw them as they whirled around and looked at him with eyes like dinner plates. He was shocked that he would encounter life on top of this hill, and they were just bewildered to begin with.

Charlie could not make a sound beyond a confused gasp. The two boys sensed his anxiety and quickly responded with an attempt to put him at ease.

“Look here, if you wouldn’t mind terribly”, said the other young man, “we have this map here, but we are having a hard time getting back onto a main road. You see, we are headed back up north. Any help would be greatly appreciated.”

“Well, uhh...I’m not…”, Charlie sputtered for lack of orientation to his present situation. He never encountered other people up here in his woods, at his overlook. He was taken aback, primarily due to his preoccupation of the day’s forthcoming

The brisk trek through rough wilderness had taken its toll on the portly fog of a man. Now wheezing, he bowed low to prop up his arching frame on a knee high boulder on the side of the path. He watched with passive intrigue as giant sweat droplets fell to earth. Each one making a crater in the previously undisturbed soil carpeting the seldom used trail leading up to the Burbank overlook. He wanted nothing more than to feel the wind blow across his puffy face when he got to the top.…

Wilderness; To McCandless and many other people, it has a very special and specific allure. While to most it is a lawless and dangerous place, McCandless sees the wilderness as a pure state where the evils of modern society don’t exist. This is a place where someone like him can live by his own rules and only be dependent on himself. And for McCandles this was what compelled him to live in and of the wilderness. Although McCandless journal entries depict that he does receive some answers for his questions, his reality of day-to-day life in the wilderness is not as romantic as he thought or imagined it to be.…

To begin with, a couple of weeks after Charlie, a 32-year-old man with an I.Q. of 68, has an operation to make him “smart”, he doesn't see any progress in his intelligence. After work one day, Frank and Joe, Two employees at Donner’s Bakery who often pick on Charlie, take Charlie to a bar, where they urge him to dance like a buffoon and then abandon him, but charlie is unaware of that and thinks they're all having a good time. “Everyone laffed and we had a good time and they gave me lots of drinks and Joe said Charlie is a card when hes potted” (190). This demonstrates that Charlie’s limited self-awareness is leaving him vulnerable for others to take advantage of. He’s limited self-awareness is making him unaware that Frank and Joe are picking on him and using him just for a laugh.…

In this paragraph Charlie hasn't been capable of handling his emotions properly and has been furious due to his intelligence decreasing. One point is when Charlie has been edgy and rude, as well as having arguments with his neighbors and other tenants. This is shown when Charlie says “I have become edgy and irritable. Having fights with people in the building…”(Pg:194) this relates to my point because it is Charlie himself saying this about himself, showing he has been very unstable recently. Secondly when Charlie was upset because one of his neighbors had made a noise complaint which resulted with the owner coming and talk to Charlie and after they had left he got so heated that he started throwing and breaking things such as his records,…

This event made it particularly clear to me that, had my brothers and I not cooperated, Noir would have most likely not been found. It would have been overwhelming for a single person to continuously search without sleep and rest. We immediately split responsibilities. Two of us went out looking while the third began producing 'lost cat' signs. During this event I recall thinking that Noir must've been wondering where his bed, food, and humans were and that he might die alone and afraid.…
