Clara Barton
“I may be compelled to face danger, but never fear it, and while our soldiers can stand and fight, I can stand and feed and nurse them.”(Barton) These words were said by…. Clara Barton, was a nurse in the Civil War and the founder of the American Red Cross. She was known as the "angel of the battlefield" for her volunteer efforts during the Civil War. Her life was dedicated to her work. When the Civil War broke out, she felt an immediate need to help. Later she went on to help identify more than 13,000 unnamed wounded or deceased soldiers. She had two brothers, David and Stephen Barton. When she was older, she became a teacher. When the Civil War broke out she had an immediate need to help. She became a nurse for The Union. She even got the nickname “The Angel of the Battlefield”. After the war Clara Barton made the organization that is still important today in every country, The International Red Cross, American Association, and the National First Aid Society. She also wrote a book called The Story of My Childhood, which was published in 1907. Barton died at her home in Glen Echo, Maryland, on April 12, 1912. Today, she has her own memorial, called the Clara Barton National Historic Site. She made an association that still help thousand, if not millions of people to this day. Not only this, but she saved thousands of life just in the Civil War. She is the “Angel of the Battlefield.” “I have an almost complete disregard of precedent, and a faith in the possibility of something better. It irritates me to be told how things have always been done. I defy the tyranny of precedent. I go for anything new that might improve the past.”
