The heart is a complex organ that we need in order to pump blood to our body. The cardiac cycle and blood pressure (BP) are two things that greatly affect how our body can function. Both are a part of the circulatory system. There are many diseases that can affect the cardiac cycle and the BP. These diseases can affect our circulatory system, lungs, and our heart’s ability to function properly. When the cardiac cycle and BP are affected then the body is in danger of being greatly damaged.
The cardiac cycle is what causes the BP to rise and fall. This occurs first through a ventricular contraction. When this contraction of the ventricles happens the blood is forced to go into the pulmonary artery and the aorta. This causes the pressure to increase

PVR can be affected by an increase or decrease of its self. Issues that cause an increased PVR can include vasoconstriction drugs, hypercapnia, hypoxemia, atelectasis, and acidemia. Issues that cause a decreased PVR can include vasodilation drugs, hypocapnia, alkalemia, and any form of strenuous exercise (Schnur, 2017). PVR can be treated by treating the cause of what is either increasing or decreasing the PVR. This can include giving vasodilation or vasoconstriction medications depending upon an increased or decreased PVR. For an increased PVR, there is also treatment with oxygen therapy to help with the hypoxemia. Pulmonary hypertension is also a disease greatly affected by an increased PVR. This disease is treated by oxygen therapy, diuretics, and calcium channel blockers (Lewis, Dirksen, Heitkemper, & Bucher, 2013). PVR affects the BP through either an increase or decrease of its self. This occurs through any causes that could either increase or decrease the PVR, will do the same to the BP. This is because the vascular resistance is directly related to the BP.
