She must go far away from any man she must stay in a tent. When woman have this time they are very powerful. They must only use one cup and spoon and always wash them when used. She must fast during the day but able to eat at night. She can sew, tan hides, chop wood and do what ever else was needed to be done for the house. Old women will be there with them and teaching them the ways and instructing them on what to do. Women are also not suppose to touch their hair during their first menstruation. It is believed that your hair would be really thin or would fall out. They are not suppose to eat berries on their first time, I never got to ask my grandma why because we was told never to ask why just to listen. When you have a child and get its name in a sweat lodge or at the sun dance. It is very important to get their Indian name because that is when they become known in the creators kingdom. When getting the child’s Indian name you set up a sweat and invite the name giver over. You offer gifts and a meal afterwards. The one giving the baby the name hold the child and rocks him and shakes a rattle and sings a song and directs it to the spirit involved. What ever the baby gets named after is the spirit that the old man knows. After the singing the old man uses the pipe and offers it to the spirits and asks for good things for the baby. After a baby gets their name they are not suppose to be hit on the head because it is so sacred and it might scare the spirit away. A baby must never be kept in a swing at night.
