Unlike other Asian American communities, which usually struggles with poverty and unemployment, Chinese international students in America is one of the extremely unique groups. They tend to come from wealthy families and the number of these Chinese international students in the US is increasing exponentially every year. However, the community does face some issues that could potentially affect this huge population in the US. For instance, the Chinese love to gamble so much that it had been a part of the orient culture for thousands of years. While establishment such as casinos are illegal in main land China, many international students are spoiled by the opportunities they have in the US to engage in gambling. The social acceptance of gambling is one of the major reasons for Chinese students in the US to gamble as a number of research journals discuss. In her analysis of Chinese students’ gambling habits, Anise M. S. Wu suggests that while many cultures share the love for gambling, the Chinese are in a league of their own. He notes that the “prevalence rate of gambling problems among Chinese communities are as high as 2.5–4%” (Wu). 1 out 5 people today are Chinese, even more are under the influence of Chinese culture as they might be overseas Chinese or mixed race people with Chinese ancestry. As a result, 2.5-4% of such communities are a significant amount of any population. Places such as Hong Kong and Macau have specially designed casino tours for visitors from the main land since the communist party bans all gambling activities there. Zhonglu Zeng, a researcher from a prestigious Macau institute managed a survey show that “among those who had undertaken gambling, most reported gambling (59%) as their primary purpose of visiting” (Zeng). With the entire country’s passion for gambling, Chinese international students showed their enthusiasm as researchers also found a higher “risk of problem gambling than their non-Chinese counterparts”
