Childhood obesity can be combated by implementing a quality program that advocates for a healthy lifestyle. The prevention program should incorporate several different traits. This would include expanding the time of physical education classes which will benefit the children by influencing them to incorporate physical activity into their daily lives and will help the obesity rates in San Diego decrease. By increasing the amount children spend in physical activity during physical education, the children will acquire new skills of strength, endurance, and coordination. Not only will increasing the length of activity levels in school influence the children to incorporate physical activity into their lives, but it will also allow children to apply their skills in different youth-oriented settings, such as community and recreation centers and after school programs. Enhancing school based prevention programs will allow schools more time to teach children proper nutrition, since most parents rely on schools to teach their children healthy eating habits, but the schools certainly don’t focus on this, since they are struggling to teach reading, writing, and arithmetic. They don’t have the time to teach nutrition and don’t have the money. Well, in order for this plan to be successful, schools should be provided with adequate and sustained resources through the city’s funding to implement relevant changes in the school environment. With sufficient funding, the school can increase the time children engage in physical activity and the availability and consumption of foods and beverages that support a healthy diet. A way for the city to fund the schools is to collaborate with restaurants that serve healthy foods, such as Subway, and then hold a food fair at the school so that the restaurants have to pay a fee in order to advertise their food. With the money the school can fund a quality school-based prevention program. Another way the city can fund this program is by holding fundraisers. For example, holding a marathon that will raise awareness of childhood obesity. The entrance fee and donations will then go towards the program to educate children about nutrition and fitness. While there isn’t one single solution that will solve the problem of childhood obesity, the influence that the schools have on children’s health in the United States could actually could have a positive effect in saving their
