In the United States, childhood obesity has tripled in thirty years (Sanchez). It is a severe issue in America and local governments should take actions on it. The diseases from obesity varies depending on the individuals. Local city governments can make a difference to find solutions for childhood obesity. Some of the people argue that it is parents ' jobs and it is not governments ' responsibility. However, there are actions that local governments can take to prevent childhood obesity. It would be the proper role for local governments to get involved and make changes in healthy food choices.
The causes of obesity are diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and chronic diseases. In lower incomes and minority neighborhoods, they suffered unequal access to healthy food. Therefore, children eat poor and unhealthy food. Children who are obese are not able to live longer if they do not change what they eat. Due to inaccessible and unaffordable healthy food choices, children are bound to gain unwanted weight and they will become ill. In rural/urban areas, supermarkets do not provide nutritious food but junk food. According to the book Local Government Actions to Prevent Childhood Obesity, "The food and physical activity choices made every day affect short- and long-term health and are directly related to weight outcomes."
