Next, lack of physical activity and sedentary lifestyles are contributing to the upsurge in childhood obesity. Weight gain starts when more energy is consumed from either overeating or increased caloric intake than is burned off (Nemet, 2015). Many American children are addicted to some form of electronic gadget which varies from the television (TV), to video games and/or the internet. Due to this, they no longer participate in physical activities and spend most of their free time sitting or lying down.
The medical field recognizes the decline of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity in the pediatric population as exercise deficit disorder (EDD). Studies have proven that children who spend more time in a sedentary state will have increased risk of weight gain along with other health related disorders (Nemet, 2015). One of the most popular activities for children who are home is TV viewing. Children who spend many hours watching television will gain more weight than children who do not because they are more likely to munch on unhealthy snacks.
Childhood obesity is not only about nutrition but the amount of time spent participating in physical activity. The CDC recommends that children and adolescents should do one hour or more of physical activity each day. Aerobic activity should make up most of the 60 or more minutes of physical activity each day.
