He was out hunting rather than being secluded indoors and he takes pleasure in buying expensive clothes and food. The Monk was different than the regular monk because he breaks the vow of poverty. Meanwhile, the Friar was evil and money-hungry. Chaucer criticized the Friar because he stole from the poor and was very good at receiving bribes. He knew the bars better than the almshouse. The segments of medieval society that the pilgrims come from are varied. Some come from the court, the Church, the law, the knights, the villages, etc.
Their participation in a common pilgrimage suggest about the times that regardless of social rank, clothes, and transportation, the religious pilgrimages were thought to bring you closer to God and offer healing and forgiveness. The pilgrims jointly abandon their homes, family, etc in order to reach salvation.
Judging from his pilgrims, I think Chaucer believes people are often a mix of both good and evil. He shows this through the Nuns character description and the Monk. The Nun is a good person, she is proper and quiet, but negative quality is that she emphasis on her appearance and she acts like something she's not. The character is in an unhappy life because she would rather be a lady in court than a nun. Meanwhile, the monk loves the outdoors but he is not the typical monk. He enjoys expensive clothes and food. The characters in the novel are all putting up a facade. They all going to the pilgrimage to show that they love God but it is really to show off
