Sexual assault in any shape or form is frowned upon in all society globally. Human rights organizations such as, the Human Rights Watch, and Amnesty international USA has reported widespread examples of assaults. While sexual assault victims can be males, majority are women and girls. Forensic psychologist plays a vital role in categorizing type of rapist an individual and determining if a sex offender is a danger and should be involuntarily civilly committed. In order to be able to categorize and understand the mind of a rapist psychologist have studied passed crime and linked patterns to certain types of behavior exhibit by offenders.

They stated that there are nine discrete rape subtypes and six variables that are considered the building block for the development and ongoing revision of the MTC rape typology. The six variables are the following: aggression, impulsivity, social competence, sexual fantasies, sadism, naïve cognitions or beliefs. First is mentioned is Aggression, which is used by rapist to gain the victims compliance, it is divided in two broad categories (1) instrumental or strategic, and (2) expressive aggression or nonstrategic violence. Instrumental aggression usually presents no anger except for when the victim resists, whereas expressive hurts, abuses or degrades the victim. Second, Impulsivity, which plays significant role in sexual assault is a powerful predictor of recidivism frequency of offending. Third, Social competence is described as having poor social and interpersonal skills, especially with the opposite sex. Fourth, Sexual fantasies refers to any mental imagery that is arousing or erotic to the individual. The opportunistic rapist (types 1 and 2) engages in sexual assault simply because the opportunity to rape presents itself. The pervasively angry rapist (type3) demonstrates a predominance of global and undifferentiated anger that pervades all areas of the offender’s life. Sexually motivated, sadistic rapist (4 and 5) the sexual motivated rapist is divided into sadistic and non-sadistic. Sexually motivated, non-sadistic rapist (type 6 and 7) engages in a sexual attack because of an intense sexual arousal prompted by specific stimuli identified in the intended victim. Vindictive rapist (8 and 9) in an effort to express anger towards women the rapist uses harmful, humiliating, and degrading methods.
