Social media has been a part of the modern world for many years now. Social websites and applications that enable users to create and share content or to participate in social networking. Examples of this include: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other sites. Social media has proven to be useful and efficient over the years. However there can be some complications in using these sites. A higher quality definition for this term would be the misuse of social media to persecute, intimidate, or shame someone publicly. Cyber bullying is most common with youth than adults. There are many types of cyberbullying. They include: harassing someone; such as posting rumors and untrue yet hurtful information about someone. Posting embarrassing photographs of the person; this includes nudes or other demeaning pictures. This type of cyber bullying also leads to blackmail. Blackmail is the action of demanding things from a person in return for not revealing compromising information about the person. And other type of cyber bullying is masquerading; this is when a bully creates another identity online to harass someone while hiding their identity. Cyberbullying can lead to serious effects to the victims. Discrimination like this can cause sleep deprivation, change in eating habits, incredibly poor grades and maybe cutting school. It can also alcohol and drug use. More serious effects are depression, self-abuse and suicide. Cyberbullying mainly goes against the human dignity catholic social teaching. The principle states that “Every human being is created in the image God and redeemed by Christ. Therefore they deserve respect as a member of the human family".
