Love is the greatest feeling in the world. It should be easy, pure, and free. Everybody should be able to love themselves and each other without hesitation. It should be easy to find love, to stay in love and that love should last forever. But we know that is not true, it is not even possible because capitalism hinder our ability to love. Capitalism is one of the main reason that we cannot love ourselves and each other. There are countless reasons on how capitalism hinders our ability to love. In The Art of Loving, Erich Fromm writes about how capitalism is making men into machines and that stops their ability to love. In the article For Love...and Business, Gloria Haraito looks at …show more content…
Men have become nothing more than a small moving part in the giant machine. They became parts that are expendable and replaceable. Capitalism needs them to comply without complaint and consume without question. Men no longer need to have feelings for self-love or even being loved. Capitalism wants these robots to command and fit into the system without friction. Capitalism needs men, every men, all men to be a worker, a slave to the system. I have worked with many men that are perfect examples of this. Some of the guys I work with would get up at 4:00AM in the morning, sit in traffic for 2 hours to get to work. They would work until 6:00PM and drive another 2 hours home. All they have time left is to have a simple dinner and a quick shower before they have to go to sleep. These men do not have time to care or think about themselves let alone find love. All the money they make goes to a giant mortgage that takes 30 years to pay off, There are still cars, insurance and other bills to pay. I wash the dishes only if you do the laundry. I will pay the electric bill only if you pay the water. Everything is to be counted and fair. That is how capitalism hinder our ability to love. Real love is based on acceptance and respect, not counting money or keeping track on a spreadsheet. For real love to have a change in capitalism, men must insulate himself from the capitalist system. He must find love by loving himself first. This is very difficult because from the second we are born, we have been trained to fit into this capitalist machine. For example, some of the guys I work with are already numb from years of shutting out themselves and others. They keep working without questioning why or have any understanding of what they are working towards. I would tell them take a day off, relax and enjoy life a little. Most of them don’t even know what to do with a day off because they have been stuck in the system for so long. But after a while, some men are beginning to see a way out. They would move closer so they don’t have to sit in traffic for 4 hours a day. Instead of buying a giant house, they went with a
