The movie Brooklyn is set during the 1950’s. It starts off in Enniscorthy, Ireland where we are introduced to the main character Eilis. Eilis comes off as a very relatable person. She’s religious, hardworking, and seems very genuine. In Ireland she has very plain clothes and doesn’t wear any makeup. To the viewer, Enniscorthy, Ireland comes off as very bland and gives Eilis a shallow character. The director does this to show the viewer that there is very little opportunity for Eilis. From the get go, the reader can tell that she is disappointed with America. It is also further detailed that it is not what she was expecting; the landscape and buildings were all “disappointingly matte” (Adichie 105). Further, she was even more shocked by the way her Aunt, Aunty Uju had so easily conformed to the American culture expectations.
