In Randy Pausch's "The Last Lecture", he uses the quote: “The brick walls are there for a reason. The brick walls are not there to keep us out. The brick walls are there to give us a chance to show how badly we want something. Because the brick walls are there to stop the people who don’t want it badly enough. People that do not think they can accomplish a goal are the ones that do not. For example, if I think I will do badly on a history test, I will do poorly. Having a negative attitude and having bad thoughts can have a detrimental effect on one's performance. People that believe in themselves and want to accomplish more will “break down the brick walls”. These people will “go the extra mile” to reach their end goal. A brick wall may be an obstacle to many, but the people that want it badly enough will do their best to overcome the adversities they will face on their path to success and greatness. The people who do not want to work hard or want it bad enough will give up easily and back down when faced with problems. Perseverance is a strong quality that can be found in successful people. Perseverance is the quality of being determined and devoted to do something regardless of hardships and struggles. Setting goals for oneself can help someone overlook and defeat obstacles that are obstructing them from reaching their end goal. However, one should not stop at their end goal.
