Breaking of Charity Many times in Arthur Miller’s play The Crucible there were instances where characters would break charity with one another. Although this play is mainly about McCarthyism in the 1950’s and how that is seen during the Puritan times. However, Arthur Miller also shows the idea of how individuals of Salem simply broke charities among each other. Through his characters, Arthur Miller shows how breaking charity can destroy the village of Salem. Before the start of The Crucible there were things going on between John Proctor and Abigail Williams. Once Abigail went to the forest John had found out and did not like what was happening with this situation. Even though John still has little feelings for Abigail he takes charge by saying, “ Abby, you’ll put it out of mind. I will not be comin’ for you more.” (145). The quote shows that John has grown over Abby and wants to stay with his wife Elizabeth who knew nothing of Abigail and John. As time goes on Abigail gets frustrated with John and Elizabeth, so she accuses Elizabeth of witchcraft.

As night time falls “I have waked at night many a time and found her in a corner, readin’ a book.” (155) . When he says that many of the people in Salem confront him and think his wife is doing witchcraft. Also in the presence of Martha Corey reading her books, “ I tried and tried and could not say my prayers. And then she close her book and walks out of the house, and suddenly I could pray again!” (155). By introducing these statements and information about his wife hiding books and that he can’t pray while she is reading them, Corey brings his wife into connection with witchcraft. He breaks the bondage of marriage by thoughtlessly giving out her innocent ways of reading, and because of that she is sentenced to hang. After this Giles is sentenced to hang as he is unwilling to give names of people doing
