Body Language Tactics Paper

Scott Rouse’s seminar entitled Body Language Tactics was very informative as it relates to body language and what it means in a business aspect. It seemed the most informative portion of the seminar as it relates to my organization is the reasons why individuals lie. According to Mr. Rouse, we lie for love, hate or greed (personal communication, October 17th, 2015). I work in the mental health industry and the clients I work with have typically suffered some very unfortunate events in their past which tend to make them more likely to be dishonest about pertinent mental health issues such as, medication compliance, therapy compliance and medication management compliance. As I sat and listened to why we lie, it helped me understand a different context of why people would find lying the most …show more content…
They consider it support for why they could not attend their treatment. Lying is a very offensive word, but in the context of this situation, some clients have a family member call and report an ailment or some issue they are having so they do not have to attend the appointment, which is a lie for love. The family member lies for them because they are typically thoroughly involved in the treatment process and want success, but have dealt with the same situations of non-compliance as we have. A study on mental health medication effectiveness found non-compliance to be the main culprit in the inefficient evidence of how effective anti-psychotic medications are, and found in the follow up to this study, 40% of participants became non-compliant (Smith, Hughes & Budd, 1999). When I do meet with clients face-to-face, I will now be much more adept at reading body language and reflecting on the reasons for dishonesty. The seminar even helped me learn how to read facial cues that reflect when a person is not being truthful. I don’t attend these meetings with an interrogation type attitude, but their success is so heavily linked to compliance, I try not to give any option but
