The girl was extremely tall, beautiful, and skinny. However, the modeling agency after a while told her in order to further her modeling career any further she would have to have surgery to shave her hips because they were not skinny enough. This is one example of how society makes women feel not beautiful because they are not skinny enough. I also went into modeling when I was younger and they told me in order to further my career I would have to stop being an athlete and get rid of my butt and hips. “The average American woman is 5’4 and 140 pounds, whereas the average female model portrayed in the media is 5’11 and 120 pounds.” (Pavica Sheldon) Society pressures women that the only way to be perfect is too be 5’11 or taller and 120 pounds, with no hips or butt. This causes some women to become anorexic so they can become smaller. “Anorexic is an emotional disorder characterized by an obsessive desire to lose weight by refusing to eat.” (OxfordDictionaries) The South Carolina Department of Mental Health has estimated that anorexia has the highest death rate of any psychiatric illness. They have also estimated that the mortality rate associated with anorexia nervosa is 12 times higher than the death rate of ALL causes of death for females 15-24 years old. Some women spend thousands of dollars trying to achieve this perfect Barbie look. “One woman is named Sarah Burge and she’s from the UK. She spent over 1 million dollars just to achieve that Barbie look. Being the perfect example of how Barbie has hurt women everywhere. Her story started like every other girl who goes through this, since she was young she was taught that in order to be beautiful, you had to have the perfect hair, clothes and makeup. The older she got, the more convinced of this she was. Somewhere along the line, she decided to blow thousands of dollars trying to get this ideal look. She claims now that she has so much more confidence and that women everywhere would be smart to go through this, because “it’s okay for women to be someone they’re not.” (Sarendippity) In this example you read the “the older she got, the more convinced of this she was,” the reason for this is because the media pushed this perfect look on the models and everywhere she looked there was the “perfect look.” It is not okay for women to be someone they are not, this is a fine example of how society pushed this women over the limits because she was not accepted as the picture perfect women that is shown everywhere you look.
