Betty Friedan Betty Friedan’s inspiring contributions to feminism are very important to understanding women’s history. Her view of the "The Problem With No Name" is from her book “The Feminine Mystique”. it is when a housewife feels empty, and asks herself “Is this all I have to look forward to?”. Friedan has experienced this herself, too. When she wrote her famous book, she wanted to show her research and analysis of other housewives who felt the same way as her. She found that a massive amount of women did experience this, but felt that they was going insane or was ungrateful for what they had. She died on her 85th birthday in 2006, of a congested heart failure. She was happily married with three healthy children to look after, and a husband to provide for her. She moved to New York City after graduating Smith College with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. At her job, she took a maternity leave for her first child. When she asked for a second maternity for her second child, she was fired. At the time, she had no help from the law to help her keep her job.
For her 15th reunion with her graduating class at college, Friedan made a survey to all the women. She asked her peers about how they'd use their education, their marriage, and about their life at home. She found that an astonishing amount women felt unfulfilled and trapped in their roles. She intended to have her analysis written in a magazine article, but found no buyers. Instead, Friedan published it as “The Feminine Mystique”.
