Betrayal is something everyone deals with. In 1984 George Orwell shows how betrayal affects everything that happens to everyone in his book. In his book 1984, his character Winston Smith begins a diary which is against the Partys rules. Winston then thinks that O’Brien, who is a member of the inner party, is also an ally. Winston then gets a paper from the dark haired girl and they slowly start rebelling against the party and Big Brother by being together and being in love until they both get caught and taken to the Ministry of Love. Orwell shows the extent of Winston, Julia, and even O’Brien and Mr. Charrington’s betrayal to each other. Orwell shows that sooner or later someone betrays someone else. Winston and Julia have a difficult relationship. In the two minutes of hate Winston thinks,”Vivid, beautiful hallucinations flashed through his mind. He would flog her to death with a rubber truncheon. He would tie her naked to a stake and shoot her full of arrows like Saint Sebastian. He would ravish her and cut her throat the moment of climax.” (15)This was before Julia had given Winston her I love you note. When Winston and Julia meet in the clearing Winston tells Julia,”I hated the sight of you. I wanted to rape and then murder you afterwards.
