BEST PRACTICES IN MENTAL HEALTH CARE IN THE UNITED STATES – U.S. NEWS AND WORLD REPORT
Although the present research aims at facilities for severe mental illness in the Houston area, we find it relevant to get an overview of some of the best practices in mental health throughout the United States. It provides a reference of what good facilities have to offer and what can be achieved in this field.
To build our list of excellent services over the Country, we considered two primary sources. The first is the list of referrals provided by the mental health facilities in the Houston area assessed for the research. On the questionnaires handed to their representatives, we asked about best practices nationwide.

This strategy goes beyond the purpose of the present research, since building a measure for such diverse parts, so different in nature, tends to distort the reality. Besides, it is not always easy to determine what should be a good result in mental health, because there is considerable controversy about the most adequate treatments for each infirmity.
The U.S. News & World Report’s list of best Psychiatric hospitals will be used here as a first resource of recognized mental health care facilities, along with the referrals made by the facilities assessed for our study. The Massachusetts General Hospital’s Department of Psychiatry includes more than 60 clinical and research programs. It provides emergency and urgent care, general and specialty outpatient services for adults, adolescents and children, psychological and educational assessment services, psychiatry and addiction programs, neurotherapeutics services and forensic psychiatry (Massachusetts General Hospital, 2016).
The Department is recognized for integrating patient care and clinical research, having the Hospital’s largest research program. Each year, 100 psychiatry residents, psychology interns and clinical fellows are trained. The institution also houses the Mass General Psychiatry Academy, a series of web-based seminars, satellite and live symposia and teleconferences. Finally, it partners with local organizations and offers free patient and family education programs in Boston.
Its website offers vast information about the treatments provided, including a glossary of services with their brief description. It also contains a homepage with stories of former patients and professionals and a patient and family resource center.
